A Letter from Our Dean
As we link together Dangriga Town, Ecumenical Junior College, and the Stann Creek District with the world…visitors, friends, prospective students, alumni, parents, community members, and other interested groups… we say welcome to Southern Belize.

My team and I are diligently working to become the pulse of our community and its immediate region. Our aim is to positively influence human conditions in our district by providing the skills and knowledge needed to survive in the 21st Century and by teaching our students to be resourceful.

We have, over the years, secured a name in education by providing quality education to our students. We are proud to say that we have graduated over twenty-one hundred students since 1988. These students now dominate the workforce in the Stann Creek district and have built notable careers across the country and abroad.

To fully honor our mission and to ensure that we continue to educate the “total” individual, we are moving forward with visions of excellence. We first acknowledge that our students come to us from diverse backgrounds and with diverse needs. We are making needed changes to our programs, improving our infrastructure, upgrading our security, training our staff, among others.

See for yourselves. Continue to browse our site and feel free to contact us.

Thank you.

Karen Martinez, Dr.
Dean, EJC

The History of SCEJC

Stann Creek Ecumenical Junior College began classes on August 29, 1986. Its emphasis for the first two years was Business, and successful students obtained an Associate Degree in Business Administration. Classes were held from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. after the regular high school program for the first year. In 1988, the Science program was added and the Arts program followed this in 1991 the General Studies program in 1994; and the Primary Education program in 2005.

The Junior College was called Stann Creek Ecumenical Sixth Form until 1998. It was also in 1988 that students moved to the present site, separate from the high school. The new building and compound were inaugurated on October 7, 1988. Finance was obtained from the Government of Belize, Caribbean Development Bank, and USAID through the Basic Needs Trust Fund Project.

The History of Our Emblem

The Stann Creek Valley is agriculturally rich and, in order to identify with the area and communities which it serves, the College emblem depicts a basket of some of the main staples and products found in the Valley and the sea which washes the shores of the Stann Creek District. The three superimposed doves represent the spiritual nature of the mission of the College and on a more natural plane they are symbolic of the three religious denominations that made up the original Ecumenical Commission; the Vine, separating the doves and the basket, signifies the aspirations of the Student Body. The laurel, enclosing the two symbols, reminds us of the glory and freedom that education bestows on the individual. ‘Caritas’ – love, concern for others – underlines the motto of the College.

The Emblem is a reminder of the hopes, aspirations, and goals of the College which is also to create an atmosphere of tolerance, harmony, and peace within its community and the other communities it has been mandated to serve.

Our Mission

The Stann Creek Ecumenical Junior College is a comprehensive community college offering a wide range of academic programs with an emphasis on Arts, Business, and Science orientation. The Junior College focuses primarily on the development of the “total” individual. We embrace the philosophy that quality education should be affordable; thus living, learning and working skills are fostered in each individual.

It is the duty of this institution to:

  • provide its students with an education that is appreciative of the arts, science, and business and their applications;
  • teach its students an appreciation and acceptance of the many cultures which have enhanced the Belizean mosaic;
  • develop in its students’ respect and appreciation for the environment;
  • Imbue in each student a love of learning which will lead them to extend their boundaries of knowledge.
